K a Bar Great ? by independent author Islua Dorthal**NOW in a new location and name: See BB Lounge for updated review! **KGB is a very small bar, located in an apartment-sized room at the time of writing this review. However that doesn't stop the place from bringing the three B's as per this quote from the assistant to the owner - Liokki Black "KGB brings the very best of the three B's: Buns, Booze, and Beats."The venue, likely mainly due to its size is serviced by two Viera, with the owner Haru Shirogane and the aforementioned Liokki or Lio for short as he insisted.Their partnership is a delight to watch with Haru being ever polite and kind in nature while Lio takes the reins in being less formal with the guests and always seems to have a pulse on just the right amount of teasing for his partner to handle.Beyond their exchange of wits, the bar also offers an Orchestration that seems to determine a theme for the night though requests are permitted if the guests want to hear something in particular. The bar takes the best advantages of what space there is with a crowded and perhaps overwhelming variety of options but one thing is for sure it could take you weeks if not months before you run out of drinks to try.
Fortunately for this writer's wallet. the drinks are all very cheap but good quality which allows you to speed up the sampling process if you are light on gil. There are couches and a cushion that covers the floor down a step from the bar with the cushion being able to be removed if guests feel the mood strike for some close quarter dancing. This all provides a cozy atmosphere when the place is quiet to almost overwhelming experience when the place is packed though luckily the music is never blaring so loudly you can't also have a conversation with the bartenders or your fellow patrons.I have found myself coming back to this bar again and again after initially venturing in due to prior visit to Liokki Black's establishment "Tispy Whispers."Though I'm still hoping Haru lowers the height of the bar as some of the smaller patrons if not for the host's care and attention could easily disappear under the tall counter. The highlight feature of the location is a lovely planetscape over the dance floor, which can also provide mood lighting for a variety of music numbers from the fast-paced dance songs to the slow more romantic moments and even being left fully lit for those who are not dancing but conversing on the floor or couches. The menu for this bar is plastered out front along with the theme of the Orchestration that night letting you know the sort of atmosphere to expect for the night from patrons chatting at the bar enjoying their drinks to shaking what the twelve gave them on the dance floor.I would recommend this place if you are looking for inspiration on how to make a fun environment in a small space, or if you want a more private but lively place to spend your Monday nights, or just want to see what the Orchestrion has cooked up this week.So no, to answer the question in the title this is not just a bar but an experience I encourage you to come try for yourself.
Labor of Love by Islua DorthalIn search of company and with the promise of books this venue came to my attention, with the promise of stories. and in the end, I learned the story of Tispy Whispers - one of comfort, of lavish attention, and love. The plethora of books did not disappoint, the stories are rich and vast, and the company has been nothing but pleasant. When you first enter there is a large front room with sweeping shelves of books with several comfortable seating options to curl up into if you prefer to keep the written word's company. A staircase leads upstairs to a bedroom beyond my wildest dream which is surrounded by yet more books. Most noticeable. however, to my curiosity was a hidden staircase tucked away behind a bookshelf leading down. This is where the venue of Tipsy Whispers truly begins. When I descended the stairs the first sound I heard was that of water gently gurgling, the second was the casual conversation, and then came the hum of a bar, and the occasional whisper of leaves rustling as people brushed by.A stream of natural light spotlights the entrance, giving the place an almost magical feeling when you first arrive. It also makes the bottles behind the bar look oh so enticing, drawing you in further, and before you know it you'll be sat at the bar chatting away with the staff or patrons. Two friendly Viera staff the bar, perhaps some would argue too small a crew for a venue of this size but with how they work together in the busy rushes you'd think there were four instead of two. Liokki Black and Haru Shirogane are the powerhouse couple that makes this place the work of love it is.Two menus - Cafe and Bar are artfully displayed, with prices all the same for both menus. The prices are fair for the quality of the menu, which is lavished with just enough extravagance without going overboard. There are a variety of options on the menu from the simpler wine, beer, and cider to the delightfully detailed specialty cocktails.
Regardless of whether your palette is refined or if you craving something sweet, or even a savory offering the menu has it all without feeling overwhelming or mismatched in its themeA bevy of barstools makes for a comfortable chatting arrangement, though there are couches on one side along with a picnic-like area with a swing and some benches. This area is covered in greenery and the source of the sound of the running water that was heard initially, with small lanterns adorning the table to bring a warm light in contrast to the blue light the large windows by the couches offer. Both side areas can be romantic little nook, a calming place for a rest should you need one, or simply a more private place to chat.Everything at Tipsy is built with the customer's comfort in mind, even the height of the bar is perfect for all races and sizes. It is all these small details that show the efforts that have gone into every ilm of the venue.Tispy Whispers is more than a coffee and cocktail bar, offering a sanctuary for all who find themselves in need of one. Truly this place is a labor of love.
Skylight Sanctuary by independent author Islua DorthalThe Skylight Cafe is a comfortable yet open set-up with plenty of space to move about with the option to either sit at the bar, choose a booth with whatever company you may have, or there are tables if you prefer something in between.
There were also a few couches upstairs if you didn't want the hustle and bustle of the bar, which would also make a good space to wait if the rest of your party is running late. The downstairs had decor that lived up to the cafe's name with twinkling cutouts of stars and moons adorned on the wall that also served as mood lighting.
There were also books galore along with a smattering of greenery, overall giving the place a charming look along with the kind of atmosphere I prefer.Initially, when our party arrived it was quiet, the staff that night consisted of three Viera, with Frederick being the waiter, with a mixologist named Skye who seemed to be the expert in the Milky Way Macchiato they offered. There was also what I assumed to be security, whom I did not have a chance to speak to as they dutifully watched over the patrons and staff. With a party of five, we gave Frederick four of our five orders initially which were speedily delivered to us, including a gorgeously detailed Milky Way Macchiato. I recommend giving this special drink a try if for nothing else but to see how your planet turns out.Frederick was also very gracious upon realizing our fifth member had not gotten their drink order in with the rest of us and though by this time, the Cafe's patrons were starting to come in serving the requested Pulsar Pineapple Punch with aplomb along with a proposed personal preference for the acidic drink. After that, the waiter only came to check on us once more leaving our group plenty of space to get to know one another as the Cafe filled up and they were inundated with orders.I would like to go back again on my own to see how their customer conversations hold up.Also as a note, the menu is upon arrival only and is light on descriptors for the drinks though Frederick seemed to be very knowledgeable with any questions our party had.It is also light on the wallet with very fair prices for the efforts the small staff output during my visit.Overall I would recommend this space to all looking for somewhere safe with a friendly staff.
Darling Dumdum by independent author Islua DorthalDumdum Cafe is a moderate-sized bakery cafe located in the ever-lovely Lavender Beds.It is surrounded by charming nooks and crannies to house sweet little picnic spots for those who might prefer their confections with a view. The outdoors isn't all this place has to offer, however with a darling interior also filled with little nooks for you to squirrel away in.There is also a larger space on the main floor with comfortable couches if you come with a larger party and a natural log table next to the entrance that also facilitates multiple guests. This cafe takes all the advantages of natural decor, filling the house with not just the smell of fresh baked goods but of other scents like pine and dried flowers. While the basement is off limits there is still plenty to enjoy, from the treats to the trinkets hidden about in every corner and if you are just the right size then you'll fit right in. Beware tall folks or you may hit your head!Of course, you'll also have to watch out for your figure as the hostess provides generous portions to one and all.The owner and one and only host - Cyan is just as sweet as her creations, always looking to the comfort of her guests and she'll make sure you feel right at home. The menu is a lovely piece of artwork made by Cyan herself and she even carefully crafted pamphlets for her opening day, a gesture to warm your heart much like the food will warm your belly. There are several flavors of just about everything so while the menu doesn't list details be sure and enquire about your favorite flavor or combination as the talented chef may just be able to whip something up for you.On top of that all the treats are free of charge even with the variety of the menu and flavors so be sure and tip your baker! The cafe also has takeaway boxes available if you can't stay and enjoy the darling company, just right for a pick-me-up after a long day.I look forward to treating myself with future trips to Cyan's bakery cafe and I encourage those who may be looking for a holiday treat for themselves, family, or friends to come and give it a try.
"Shades of Blue" by independent author Islua DorthalBluebird Bakery is part of a larger estate, but the actual establishment is located in the basement, with the larger estate making for plenty of room on the lower floor. It is run by a single baker - Malo, who I suspect named the bakery somewhat after their appearance - or at the very least very blue though that may also have to do with the Ishgard cold.Be sure and bundle up on your way here!
However, once you have arrived Malo has a variety of hot and tasty options ready for you to warm up with. The menu is available on entering on both hanging boards and paper menus, though the menus are light on details of the items the smell of the pastries alone is enough to tell you all you need to know.
Some items are also displayed on shelves and in glass shelves for you to admire or be tempted by.They also have a few aetherically enhanced items available on the menu if you need a little bit more pep in your step.Prices are on the cheaper end, making this a lovely place to bring a few friends on a budget, or just to treat yourself. There is a small bar area where you can watch the baker work, a few tables scattered on the floor if you wish to spread out a bit more, a fireplace to warm yourself with a little nook with a bed hidden away nearby if you perhaps need a nap from your sugar coma.
Booths are also available to sit in, with windows peering out into the chilly Ishgard, letting you have a view of the city while you stay nice and warm.Malo is pleasant to talk with even as she is being kept busy as the only employee, seemingly ready to drop in on a lull in conversation at any moment.Bluebird Bakery is a sweet place with sweet people, ready to warm your heart, hands, and belly with their mix of conversation, fire, and warm treats so be sure and drop by next time you are in Ishgard.
The Lion's Draw by indepedent author Islua Dorthal
The Lion's Maw is more than just an arena. It is entertainment, a place where blood may get shed, where one can test if they are as fierce as the creature the venue is named after. The building consists of a seating room upstairs to allow staff to greet guests or for those who may be waiting for a follow foe or friend to relax. This area has several seats for all who may linger upstairs and the water feature covers the sounds of the fights nicely if you are looking to get away from the noise. The main attraction however is the downstairs gladiator-style arena. By its nature, this is a large space to allows for a wide variety of weapons and magicks to be used by the combatants. This space is also large enough to host the recent doubles tournament, or even for fights between those of the largest of builds. There is nowhere to hide, no risk of magics bouncing off barriers or of weapons being impeded. No, the fights here are about skill, a showdown of prowess and cunning by the fighters to use the limited environment to the best of their abilities. If you are looking for a display of the different fighting styles of Eorzea there are few places like this where you can see a magic duel one round; to a match between magic and sword, to sword on sword, or a variety of other weapons.Food and drink flow freely downstairs with prices being cheap enough that any may partake with no charge to watch the fights, though this does mean on a particularly eventful night you may be missed by staff or have to wait sometime before they can return with your order. That doesn't mean you can make it out without spending Gil, as the venue does not monitor bets made. However, be careful of any disputes or you may be facing off on stage for your coin purse. There are also somnus available to any wishing to enhance their viewing or fighting experience. Effects vary so be sure and read the labels carefully, especially if you plan on fighting after you imbibe.Despite being a large and popular venue they only list three staff members the key to it all being Zozorido Dodorido - "Lion of Ul'dah" among other titles they are who watches over the fights with a keen eye and a silver tongue to keep those who may not be watching the fights as closely engaged with vocal details.Tanvi Arya and Padudu Moro are the two waitresses and they are kept very busy throughout the night with not much time to stop and chat but carrying this or that to waiting customers. As a result of the waiting and the draw of the fights seating can be limited on the arena floor with the couch and chairs being a highly coveted spot for those wanting somewhere other than the pillows or rugs that are strewn across the floor. There are ornate decorations on the walls, giving you an idea of just how much gil went into creating the place, and overall the looks of the place match the Goblet theme. In one corner you can even spy a pile of riches, with a door leading to the hall of fame for those who will be forever memorialized in their victories. Are you prepared to battle the crowds?
For riches, for glory, or just for that oh-so-coveted couch? Or perhaps you would rather battle a worthy foe?
If you are ready for any of those then The Lion's Den will offer you an experience not soon forgotten.
